WACC administers the SIS program in Idaho, Washington, and Alaska while California Campus Compact, Hawaii Pacific Islands Campus Compact, Montana Campus Compact, and Oregon Campus Compact administers the SIS program in their respective states.
What is Students in Service (SIS)?
The Students in Service program is a part-time AmeriCorps program that encourages and supports college and university students to enroll as part-time AmeriCorps members who provide valuable service in their communities. SIS members make a difference in their communities, gain valuable civic and workforce skills, and upon completion of their term of service, earn an education award.
By participating in the Students in Service program, the member becomes a part of the AmeriCorps national service network that improves lives and strengthens communities throughout the United States of America.
Students in Service Program Goals:
- To increase the number of college student volunteers and service learners
- To help disadvantaged youth succeed and advance along the academic continuum
- To develop members' and students' civic skills, attitudes, and habits
- To improve members' and students' workforce skills
Program Purpose
The purposes of the Students in Service program are to meet critical community needs by engaging higher education students in service as part-time AmeriCorps members, and fostering within them an ethic of civic responsibility. Through the program, student members are introduced to local, regional, and national service-learning opportunities, resulting in a regional network of student leaders committed to serving and strengthening their local communities. Student members serve in partnership with schools and community-based organizations in the areas of education, human services, the environment, public safety, and community development. With rising tuition costs the education award earned upon successful completion of the program helps make service a viable opportunity for students with financial need.
The Students in Service program offers each student member the opportunity to choose one of three terms of service (essentially, the number of hours s/he agrees to serve). Upon successful completion of a term of service, members are eligible to receive an Education Award (scholarship), which can be applied towards outstanding federal student loans or the cost of attendance at a college or university.
The Education Award amount varies, depending on the term of service:
300 Hour Term of Service = $ 1,000.00 Education Award (scholarship)
450 Hour Term of Service = $ 1,250.00 Education Award (scholarship)
900 Hour Term of Service = $ 2,362.50 Education Award (scholarship)
