Criminal Record Check Policy
All new potential members must have a criminal record check and a National Sex Offender Registry check completed on them before they can be enrolled in the SIS program.
NOTE: Beginning with all new enrollments starting August 1, 2010, the SIS Campus Coordinator (Campus Partner) must complete a check of the National Sex Offender Registry for "all" new members before they can be enrolled into the SIS program. The results must be placed in the member's file.
A member will have the following in their file before they can be enrolled in SIS:
If the site completes the criminal record check:
- Criminal Record Check Verification Form
- Copy of National Sex Offender Registry Check results
or
If the Campus Partner complete the CR check:
- Criminal Record Check Authorization Form
- Copy of actual background check (sex offender registry check completed as part of background check)
- Copy of National Sex Offender Registry Check results
NOTE: Most teachers, counselors, health workers, and others with significant reoccurring access to vulnerable populations will more than likely already have had a background check and will pass in the Criminal Record Check Verification Form.
New procedures to complete a criminal record check:
- Once a member passes in their completed enrollment paperwork including Criminal Record Check Authorization Form (cannot complete a criminal record check on member until form is completely filled out, signed and dated) then a SIS campus coordinator orders a background check on member from the link on the bottom right corner of SIS home page.
- Background checks take 24 - 72 hours to be completed and you will receive an email with the criminal record check attached.
- Once SIS campus coordinator receives results, the majority of members will have no criminal record so then you can enroll the member; however, for those who have a record then you must ask 4 questions:
- Does the member have a felony murder conviction or is a registrered sex offender? (if student has a felony murder or is a registered sex offender then they are automatically disqualified for service)
- Does the member have any criminal history that may be detrimental to them serving with SIS or at their site?
- Do I need to contact the member for any clarification about their criminal history?
- Do I need to share these results with the site supervisor?
NOTE: A member cannot be told they cannot serve without due process of telling their side of the story before the ultimate decision is made.
- Once the SIS campus coordinator and/or site supervisor is comfortable with the member serving with SIS and at their site then the member can be enrolled no earlier than the date of the completed criminal background check.
